Omnitronic EDP 1000 Watt Class D Amplifier Teardown

Here I describe the basic operation and topology of a Class D amplifier and then tear down an Omnitronic 1000W amplifier to have a look and see what is inside. The big advantage of a Class D amplifier is the compactness and overall power efficiency. However, Class D amps are generally not used in High Fidelity application because of the limitations in dynamic range and distortion performance that can be achieved.

Here are the specifications scanned in from the user manual.

Hope the information is of some use. Thank you for watching.

  1. Nice lil amp indeed.
The “slowest” amps I’ve been working on were running at amazing 46kHz ! Some car audio bass amp crap, pretty common switching freq. for bass applications in car audio is around 50-80kHz. Post-filter feedback is rather rare, and more commonly pre-filter is used.

If we’re talking about PA systems then Powersoft K20 is my favorite 🙂 Damping factor of 5000 and full PFC and ONLY 18kW RMS in one U rack space 🙂 I own the Powersoft Digam 7000 at the moment, and it does 7k RMS and it’s also actively PFC and all in one U space.
There’s yet even more powerful beast out there from company called PKN Controls and their 3phase model PKN-40k and U can guess what’s the power rating out of these 🙂
Either PKN and Powersoft can be LAN controlled, for fully digital systems, each amp with it’s own address and so on. The best of the bests.

Anyway Gerry, nice review, U should post more often, and I’m def. waiting to C an progress on Your power supply.

  2. hi gerry, i realise this is a new post, but i bought this omnitronic 1000 amplifier around 14 months ago and have only recently started using it, but when powered up the speakers ( 2 x electrovoice zx1 8” 200w rms each .have a crackling sound or static when turned on and only last weekend the amplifier tripped, and now the power out (sound out) on the right side channel is about half the volume! i realise its nothing to do with yourself but i’m getting nowhere fast with an answer to this ,and stumbling on your video recently you seem to know a lot about this amplifier. any advice would be appreciated at all if you have the time. many thanks philip.

    1. HI Philip,

Not sure I could offer any advice, its hard to know from a description, you need to get in there with a meter and a scope to see whats wrong really. From the description it does sound broken, I would start by checking for dry joints etc…not much help I know…

      Gerry
